The RYA Power Boat Course Structure
The Royal Yachting Association’s National Powerboat Scheme is the recognised training framework in the UK, and the qualifications it produces carry weight internationally. The Level 2 course, the most widely taken qualification in the scheme, runs over two days and covers close quarters boat handling, high speed planing, man overboard recovery, collision regulations, passage planning, and engine management. No prior experience is required. Children aged 12 and above can join most adult Level 2 courses, and the certificate forms the basis for the International Certificate of Competence, required by most European countries for chartering or skippering a boat abroad.
The Intermediate course adds coastal passage planning, tidal navigation, and pilotage in unfamiliar waters. The Advanced course, the highest level in the scheme, covers night navigation and extended coastal passages, carrying a commercial endorsement that qualifies the holder to operate professionally up to 20 miles from a safe haven.
